The symposium "Emerging targets and molecules in middle space", jointly organized by the Finnish Peptide Society (FIPS), the Finnish Synthetic Chemistry Society and the Medicinal Chemistry Committee of the Finnish Pharmaceutical Society (FinMedChem) was held in Helsinki on August 24-27, 2015. The main themes of the symposium were emerging targets in CNS diseases, macrocycles in drug space, green chemistry and green medicinal chemistry, peptides as drugs and natural peptides. The plenary speakers invited by FIPS were Mart Saarma, Jean Martinez, Mohamed Marahiel, Marcel Jaspars, Tambet Teesalu, Jouni Jokela, Pirjo Laakkonen and Anja Sandström. The 1st Finnish Symposium on Biological Mass Spectrometry was held on April 14 – 16, 2015 in Tampere. The symposium was organised by the Finnish Proteomics Society (FinnProt), the Finnish Mass Spectrometry Society (FMSS) and the Finnish Peptide Society (FIPS). The plenary speakers were Nevena Zivanovic (University of Zürich, Switzerland), Oliver Schilling (Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, Germany) and Kim Ekroos ( Zora Biosciences, Finland).


FIPS-FinMedChem symposium

The 11th biannual FIPS symposium was held together with FinMedChem symposium (11 th FIPS & FinMedChem 2013) during August 28-30, 2013 in Biomedicum, Helsinki. The plenary speakers in the FIPS program were Peter Tompa (Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium), Victor Hruby (University of Arizona, USA), David P. Fairlie (University of Queensland, Australia), Sirpa Jalkanen (University of Turku, Finland), Margit Mahlapuu (Pergamum, Sweden), David Fewer (University of Helsinki) and Jyrki Kukkonen (University of Helsinki).

Finnish-Estonian Special FIPS symposium

A FIPS special symposium was held on December 18th, 2013 in Biomedicum, Helsinki. The plenary speakers were Kaido Kurrikoff and Lorena Simón Gracia from University of Tartu, Estonia. Also several short presentations were given by Finnish groups active in peptide research.


The 10th biannual peptide symposium (10FIPS) was held on February 17-18, 2011 in Tahko Spa (Nilsiä). Plenary speakers included Prof. Kristina Luthman (University of Gothenburg, Sweden), Prof. Rob M.J. Liskamp (Utrecht University, The Netherlands), Prof. Knud J. Jensen (University of Copenhagen, Denmark) and Prof. Ülo Langel (University of Stockholm, Sweden).


The Ninth Peptide Symposium was held as part of ChemBio gathering in Helsinki Fair Centre May 27 – 29, 2011. Topics were Peptides in Medicine, Peptidomimetics, Natural peptides and Peptidematerials & nanotechnology.


Finnish Peptide Society organized the 30th European Peptide Meeting in Helsinki 31.8. – 5.9.2008 at Finlandia Hall. 30 EPS gathered almost 1000 scientists world wide and 60 sponsoring companies.


Symposium proceedings


The Eighth Finnish Peptide Symposium was held in Kuopio on June 7 – 8 at hotel Rauhalahti and organized by docent Ale Närvänen & MSc Tuulia Huhtala. FIPS8 was supported by the Finnish pharmaceutical and diagnostics companies and Finnish Biobio Society. The topics of the symposium were Synthetic chemistry & Structure; Analytical chemistry: Bioinformatics, Proteomics, Arrays and Libraries; Bioactive: peptides, De Novo Peptides & Biological Systems; Pharmaceutical peptides & Imaging.


The Seventh Finnish Peptide Symposium was organized on May 30-31 in Turku, by the Peptide division of the Finnish Biobio Society in collaboration with the Finnish Graduate School Network in Life Sciences and supported by the National Graduate School in Informational and Structural Biology, Finnish pharmaceutical and diagnostics companies and Finnish Biobio Society.


The Sixth Peptide Symposium in Finland: The 2004 symposium was on May 13 – 14, at Viikki Infocentre, Helsinki and organized in collaboration with the Helsinki Garduate School in Biotechology and Molecular Biology and the Helsinki Biomedical Graduate School and with the BioBio Society.


The Fifth Peptide Symposium in Finland. The 2002 symposium was held in Kuopio on August 22 – 23, at Hotel Rauhalahti. The topics of the symposium were Modeling and NMR analyses, Synthesis strategies, Membrane associated peptides and Protein interaction sites and Target peptides.


The Fourth Peptide Symposium in Finland. The 2001 symposium was held on April 19 – 20 at Biomedicum, Meilahti at Helsinki and organized in collaboration with Helsinki Graduate School in Biotechnology and Molecular Biology (Dr. Erkki Raulo) and BioBio society (Carmela Kantor-Aaltonen and Hilkka Lankinen).


The Third Peptide Symposium in Finland. The 2000 symposium was arranged by Drs. Jari Hovinen and Veli-Matti Mukkula, Wallac Oy, Perkin Elmer raising the number of participants over sixty. The highlight of the meeting was its wide range of biological applications, which were combined to topics of peptide proteomics technologies.


The Second Peptide Symposium in Finland. The 1999 symposium was organized by Dr. Ale Närvänen. “The First Peptide Symposium in Kuopio” at the Department of Chemistry, Kuopio University and its focus was in peptide synthesis and structure.


The First Annual Peptide Syposium in Finland. The 1998 symposium was held in collaboration with Helsinki Graduate School in Biotechnology and Molecular Biology (Dr. Ilkka Kilpeläinen and Professor Heikki Rauvala, Institute of Biotechnology) and BioBio Society peptide division (Carmela Kantor-Aaltonen and Hilkka Lankinen). The symposium "Biophysical and Structural Methods in Analysis of Protein-Ligand Interactions" took place on February 13 – 14 at Biocentre, University of Helsinki.


The Second Practical Training Course in Synthetic Peptides in Immunology. The course "Structure-Function Analysis of Haematopoietic Growth factors" was held in Helsinki in June 1997. It was chaired by R.P. Revoltella, L. C. Andersson and O. Acuto and sponsored by the European Union. The contribution by Professor Leif Andersson (Department of Pathology, Haartman Institute) to the peptide science in Finland is gratefully acknowledged. The course was organized by Dr. Tiina Pessa-Morikawa (Department of Biochemistry, University of Helsinki).
