European Biotech Week 30.9.-4.10.2013

Do you want to find out or share stories about how biotechnology & DNA impacts our daily life?

The first ever European Biotechnology week will take place throughout the EU thi October with series of events, activities, shows, science experiments and conferences to showcase where and how biotech is making our daily lives better.

Since the discovery of DNA's structure 60 years ago, we have learned lots about genes, protein, viruses, bacteria and plants, to name a few. We have mapped entire genomes including human genome and biotech entrepreneurs are translating this knowledge into essential uses for our everyday lives, from the medicines we use, to the food we eat, the clothes we buy, the detergents we wash them with and the fuel we use to get us where we want to be.

A.I.Virtanen Award 2013

Ravitsemuksen Tutkimussäätiö (The Nutrition Research Foundation), Suomalaisten kemistien seura r.y. (The Finnish Chemist Society) and Societas Biochemica, Biophysica et microbiologica Fenniae (Biobio-Society) have award the A.I Virtanen prize since 1981. A.I. Virtanen prize is awarded every second year to honor the lifetime accomplishments of our internationally respected scientist, Nobel Prize laureate in science, professor Artturi Ilmari Virtanen. The organization selecting the prize winner is rotating between the three organizations. This year Societas Biochemica, Biophysica et microbiologica Fenniae has been in charge of the award committee. Within the deadline we received four excellent proposals.

The A.I. Virtanen prize is awarded to a Finnish or a foreign scientist to honor his/her accomplishments in science in one of the field represented by the granting associations. The international, translational and interdisciplinary aspects and the high-level of research are emphasized. The applicant should still be active in science.

The award committee of the Biobio-society together with Ravitsemuksen Tutkimussäätiö and Suomalaisten Kemistien Seura ry have decided to award the A.I.Virtanen prize to Prof. Kari Alitalo.

The award ceremony and the award lecture will be as a part of Bioscience Day 2013 symposium 20.3.2013 at Helsinki Exhibition&Convention centre, in Ballroom1 at 3:15PM.

Biological drugs have gained lately much attention in the treatment of several severe illnesses. Drugs based on antibodies, viruses, stem cells and the use of biological material in i.e. wound healing replace much of the current therapies of diseases with limited possibilities for treatment.

In the seminar you will hear presentations from scientists, medical industry and clinicians. The seminar will end with the special lecture of the A.I. Virtanen award winner 2013.

The presentations are in English.

There will be light refreshments available during the seminar. Please register here.
